Avanti Cafe

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería
Also known as: Avanti Natural Cafe

Avanti Cafe is a vegetarian restaurant on 17th Street in Costa Mesa whose hard-shell taco, formed to order from fresh masa, was ranked among the great tacos of Orange County by OC Weekly.

Overview

Avanti, also known as Avanti Natural Cafe, is a meatless restaurant rather than a taquería, but its taco has earned a place in Orange County taco writing. In 2011 Gustavo Arellano placed it sixth on OC Weekly's list of ten great tacos in the county.

Taco

Instead of using a factory-made shell, the kitchen shapes soft masa into a shell and fries it to order, producing a crisp, fresh-tasting casing. Arellano described it filled with potatoes, lettuce in a sesame dressing and red onions, finished with three hot sauces: a mango-habanero salsa, the Yemeni green chile paste zhug, and a chipotle-style red sauce. The mix of Mexican technique with Middle Eastern and other condiments reflects the eclectic vegetarian cooking of coastal Orange County.
