Carnitas El Canelo
Carnitas El Canelo is a home-based weekend taco operation in Richmond run by the Graciano family, serving Puebla-style cemitas, carnitas and tacos dorados.
History
The Graciano family began selling food from their home around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as a side business. Food is handed out from the alley across the street from the family's address on Turpin Court, and service runs on Friday evenings and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. In 2022 the family told the Richmond Standard they were saving to buy a food truck. That year the San Francisco Chronicle placed Carnitas El Canelo on its list of the top tacos in the East Bay; critic Cesar Hernandez likened finding it to discovering a hidden world.
Menu
The menu reflects the family's ties to Puebla. Cemitas, the Pueblan sandwich on a sesame-studded roll, appear alongside carnitas and tacos dorados, tortillas rolled around a filling and fried until crisp.
