Carnitas El Momo
Carnitas El Momo is a Michoacán-style carnitas operation that began as a weekend stand on Fairmount Street in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, and later opened a restaurant in Monterey Park.
History
LAist described the business in 2015 as a stand run by Rómulo "Momo" Acosta, who simmered pork in copper pots and parked on weekends at 2411 Fairmount Street. Time Out credits Juan "Billy" Acosta with starting from a Boyle Heights trailer in 2015 and lists a counter-service restaurant at 1470 Monterey Pass Road in Monterey Park. The Infatuation likewise describes the move from a trailer to a brick-and-mortar shop.
Menu
The pork is cooked slowly in lard; The Infatuation notes that the seasoning includes Coca-Cola syrup. Diners choose among cuts such as shoulder, belly and skin, or order a mixed taco that combines several. Time Out mentions a surtido taco nicknamed the "aporkalypse," as well as beef cheek and oxtail. Tacos are topped simply with onion, cilantro and red salsa, and a carnitas torta is also available.
