Carnitas Los Reyes

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

Carnitas Los Reyes is a taquería on South Tustin Street in the city of Orange whose finely ground chorizo taco Gustavo Arellano called the best taco in Orange County.

Overview

Los Reyes is a carnitas specialist, but its reputation among Orange County taco writers rests on chorizo. In a 2008 OC Weekly column, Gustavo Arellano named its chorizo taco the best single taco in the county, describing sausage grated very fine and fried in its own oil, studded with whole peppercorns. He had suggested in 2007 that Los Reyes might be the county's best taquería, though he later held back that title because of its house salsa. In 2011 he ranked the chorizo taco ninth on his list of ten great Orange County tacos.

Beyond chorizo the menu centers on carnitas and carne asada tacos. The 2015 OC Weekly taco guide noted that carnitas come with chips and pickled carrots. Carnitas, pork simmered in lard until tender and crisp-edged, is the signature dish of Michoacán, and many of Orange County's carnitas shops are run by families from that state.
