Carnitas Uruapan (Santa Ana)
Carnitas Uruapan is a pork-focused carnitas shop on West Fifth Street in Santa Ana, where customers buy carnitas, chicharrones and other cuts by the pound to build their own tacos.
Overview
The Santa Ana Carnitas Uruapan is at 2106 West Fifth Street. It takes its name from Uruapan, a city in Michoacán, the state most associated with carnitas. OC Weekly's Gustavo Arellano included it in his 2016 list of the county's great old-school taquerías, describing it as a pork specialist rather than an all-purpose taco shop. A carnitas business of the same name operates in La Mesa in San Diego County; the sources do not establish whether the two are related.
Menu
The house offers carnitas, chicharrones and a range of other pork cuts. Arellano's advice was to skip ordering individual tacos and instead buy pork by the pound with tortillas and salsas, assembling tacos at the table, the customary way of eating carnitas at Michoacán-style shops.
