Del Taco
Del Taco is an American fast-food chain serving tacos, burritos and burgers, founded in 1964 as Casa Del Taco in Yermo, in the Mojave Desert portion of San Bernardino County, and headquartered in Lake Forest in Orange County.
History
Ed Hackbarth and David Jameson opened the first Casa Del Taco on September 16, 1964, in Yermo, east of Barstow, along the main route between Southern California and Las Vegas. In 1966 they formed a company to franchise the concept, which took the name Del Taco, Inc. in 1973, and in 1976 the founders sold the business to investors. In 1989 Del Taco absorbed the Naugles chain, founded by a former Del Taco partner, converting most of its restaurants.
The company passed through a Chapter 11 reorganization in 1993 and later ownership by Sagittarius Brands, a public listing in 2015, acquisition by Jack in the Box in 2022 and sale to Yadav Enterprises in 2025. It operated close to 600 restaurants in about 18 states in the mid-2020s.
Menu
The menu pairs Mexican-American items, including crisp and soft tacos, burritos, nachos, quesadillas and taco salads, with burgers, fries and shakes, a combination inherited from the drive-ins of the 1960s. It added carne asada fries, a San Diego taco shop specialty, by 2015.
