Ed Fernandez Restaurant Birrieria is a birria shop in the Nestor neighborhood of San Diego's South Bay that began as a borrowed food truck in the mid-2000s and was ranked the top taco spot in the United States by Yelp in 2022.

History

The business started when the Fernandez brothers parked a borrowed food truck in an alley lot and sold birria made from their mother's recipe; Yelp dates its birria-making to 2005. It now operates from a restaurant on Flower Avenue, just west of Interstate 5 near Imperial Beach, run by Jorge Fernandez. The shop keeps morning and early-afternoon hours several days a week. In October 2022 Yelp placed it first on its national list of top taco spots, and NBC 7 reported that the owners opened on a Tuesday to mark the occasion.

Birria served on handmade tortillas is the core of the menu, along with aguas frescas and a house hot sauce. San Diego Magazine recommends the quesataco a mano, a cheese-crusted birria taco, and notes newer items such as birria chilaquiles, torta ahogada and birria ramen. Chef Jon Sloan of Juniper and Ivy named its quesabirria among his favorite tacos in the county.
