El Borrego De Oro

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

El Borrego De Oro is a family-run restaurant in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, serving Hidalgo-style lamb barbacoa since 2003.

Overview

El Borrego De Oro, "the golden lamb," occupies a strip-mall storefront at 2403 Whittier Boulevard. The Infatuation, reviewing it in 2022, reported that the family has run it since 2003 and cooks the food of its home state of Hidalgo, and that it had three other locations around East Los Angeles. Whittier Boulevard, where it sits, is one of Boyle Heights's main commercial streets, and the restaurant's sopes and consomé make it a sit-down alternative to the neighborhood's taco trucks.

Hidalgo is the Mexican state most associated with lamb barbacoa, in which the meat is traditionally wrapped in maguey leaves and cooked in a pit. The restaurant's signature dishes are barbacoa, the consomé de borrego, the lamb broth that collects during cooking, and barbacoa sopes.
