El Campeón is a Mexican restaurant on Camino Capistrano in San Juan Capistrano, often cited as the closest thing to a true taquería in southern Orange County.
Overview
El Campeón is located at 31921 Camino Capistrano, Suite 15, in San Juan Capistrano, the mission town in Orange County's southern half. When Gustavo Arellano compiled a list of the county's great old-school taquerías for OC Weekly in 2016, he included it as the lone South County entry, observing that it was the only restaurant from that part of the county that regularly appeared on OC's best-of lists for Mexican food.
Context
The other taquerías on Arellano's list were in the central and northern parts of the county, in Santa Ana, Anaheim, Orange, Costa Mesa and Tustin, which made El Campeón the article's only southern representative. The piece gave no founding date or ownership history for the restaurant, and its listing included a phone number and the website elcampeon.com.
