El Charrito

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería
Also known as: Best Taqueria

El Charrito is a family-owned taquería and market in Salinas, California, run by the Moncada family, with a second location in downtown Monterey; it is a repeated winner of Monterey County Weekly's best taquería poll.

History

The Moncada family owned a grocery and bakery in Michoacán more than half a century ago and immigrated to the United States in 1965. In 1981 family members bought a small grocery store on West Market Street in Salinas and ran it for years as Best Taqueria, with a small hot-food counter and tortillas made in the back. Demand for the food grew to the point that in 2015 the family pulled out the grocery shelves to make room for the lines. A second El Charrito opened on Calle Principal in Monterey in 2022.

Recognition

Monterey County Weekly readers named El Charrito the county's best taquería in 2023 and again in 2025. Housemade tortillas have been part of the business since its grocery-store days.
