El Garage
El Garage is a family-run birria taquería in downtown Richmond that began in the Montano family's home garage before moving to a storefront on Macdonald Avenue.
History
As its name suggests, the business started in a garage, at the Montano family's home on Garvin Avenue in Richmond. Its following grew enough for the family to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant at 1428 Macdonald Ave. in downtown Richmond. In March 2022 the San Francisco Chronicle's food team included El Garage in its guide to the top tacos in the East Bay, one of three Richmond businesses on that list, as the local Richmond Standard reported.
Menu
Birria is the specialty. The Chronicle's critic Cesar Hernandez described the shop as serving some of the best birria in the East Bay. Birria is a stew of goat or beef braised with dried chiles and spices, associated with Jalisco, and in the taco form popular across California it is typically served with a cup of its cooking broth for dipping.
