El Gran Trompo Regio
El Gran Trompo Regio is an al pastor taco truck that parks at 20th and Mission streets in San Francisco's Mission District.
Overview
As its name suggests, the truck is built around the trompo, the vertical spit on which marinated pork for al pastor is stacked and roasted. The word regio is a colloquial name for people from Monterrey, Nuevo León. Pork is shaved from the spit to order and served with grilled onions, grilled jalapeños and onions pickled with habanero.
The San Francisco Standard named El Gran Trompo Regio among the best of the best in its 2026 taco survey, citing a local taco authority who called it his favorite al pastor in the city. The truck opens earlier in the evening than Tacos Al Charro, another popular late-night al pastor stand on the same stretch of Mission Street.
Context
Mission Street between 16th and 24th streets hosts several evening taco trucks and stands, and al pastor cut from a live trompo has become a draw for night crowds in the neighborhood.
