El Pastor del Rica

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

El Pastor del Rica is an al pastor taquería on Broadway in Chula Vista, opened in December 2024 by former boxer Ricardo "Rica" Álvarez with his brother, boxing champion Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez.

History

The original El Pastor del Rica is in the Guadalajara metropolitan area of Jalisco, where Ricardo Álvarez runs it himself; according to El Imparcial it was started about a decade before the U.S. opening, on an idea from Ricardo's wife. In early 2022, Canelo Álvarez told Telemundo 20 that he was unimpressed by San Diego's tacos and announced plans to bring his brother's taquería across the border to 645 Broadway in Chula Vista.

The Chula Vista location, at the corner of Halsey Street and Broadway, opened on December 5, 2024. The opening drew mariachis, Chula Vista Mayor John McCann and radio host El Piolín, and some customers lined up from 4 a.m. The dining room is decorated with images of Pancho Villa and Frida Kahlo and a neon sign reading "No tacos, no life."

Tacos al pastor are the centerpiece. The menu also lists suadero, carne asada, lengua, tripa (callo), longaniza or chorizo and campechano tacos, along with quesadillas, seven salsas and aguas frescas.
