El Picacho

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

El Picacho is a taco truck parked near Mission Street and South Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco, known for quesabirria tacos.

Overview

The truck sets up at 1601 Mission Street, close to the corner of Mission and Van Ness. It came to wider notice when the San Francisco Standard asked restaurant professionals for their favorite tacos in 2025: a local bakery owner named El Picacho, calling it an unexpected find and the source of his favorite tacos in the city.

The truck is best known for quesabirria, tacos filled with chile-braised beef and melted cheese and griddled until the tortilla crisps, here finished with crema and avocado. Quesabirria grew out of the birria traditions of Jalisco and became one of the most popular truck items in California in the late 2010s and early 2020s.
