El Pipirin

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

El Pipirin is a family-run Oakland food truck specializing in the cooking of Guadalajara, Jalisco, including tortas ahogadas, barbacoa and consomé.

History

KQED's 2019 feature on Fruitvale food trucks reported that El Pipirin was founded about 29 years earlier by Jorge Ayllon and his family, making it one of the longer-running trucks in East Oakland. It parks at 3315 Farnam St.

The truck focuses on Jalisco specialties. Its torta ahogada, a crusty sandwich drowned in a tomato-chile sauce, is a signature of Guadalajara. KQED reported that the barbacoa is made with beef rather than mutton and cooked in a special oven intended to imitate the long underground roasting of the traditional method, and that the accompanying consomé is served with garbanzo beans. The truck also makes small sweet empanadas daily, with fillings such as guava, sweet cream and strawberry.

Context

Trucks such as El Pipirin helped make Fruitvale a center of regional Mexican cooking in the Bay Area, offering dishes tied to specific Mexican states rather than a generic taquería menu.
