El Rey Taquiza Artesanal

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

El Rey Taquiza Artesanal is a taquería on Mission Street in San Francisco that presses its corn tortillas to order and was named one of the city's best taco shops by the San Francisco Standard in 2026.

History

El Rey is owned by Pepe Valadez, who worked for the Kimpton hotel group before opening the taquería. The Standard's 2026 survey dated the opening to about four years earlier and placed El Rey in its top tier of San Francisco tacos.

The shop's defining feature is its tortillas, which are formed and cooked as each order comes in rather than in advance. The menu covers several regional styles: carne asada, carnitas and suadero in the Mexico City manner, poc chuc (citrus-marinated grilled pork from the Yucatán), and a Tijuana-style taco topped with guacamole. The name taquiza refers to a taco spread served at parties and family gatherings in Mexico.
