La Casita Mexicana
La Casita Mexicana is a regional Mexican restaurant on Gage Avenue in Bell, known for its chiles en nogada, moles and chilaquiles divorciados.
Overview
La Casita Mexicana is at 4030 Gage Avenue in Bell, a small city in southeast Los Angeles County. The Infatuation, in a review updated in 2022, called it a Southern California Mexican institution run by two well-known chefs, and described a dining room decorated with Día de los Muertos themes. A 2013 PBS SoCal food tour of southeast LA County said it had a cult following.
Menu
The Infatuation names the chile en nogada, a poblano chile stuffed with spiced beef and covered with a sweet cream sauce and pomegranate seeds, as the signature dish. Other plates include enchiladas with three moles (mole poblano and green and red pipián), a pistachio mole flavored with hoja santa, a cheese fondue with cactus and herbs, a mushroom and cactus chile relleno and a steak plate over grilled nopales.
PBS SoCal highlighted chilaquiles divorciados, half in red chile salsa and half in tomatillo salsa separated by crema, served with beans made from Peruano beans, and quesadillas made on handmade tortillas. The sources consulted do not give a founding year.
