Overview

Where The Road Forks dates La Especial to 1952 and lists a taco stand at Avenida Revolución 718 in the Zona Centro and a restaurant at Boulevard Salinas 3600 in Aviación; the original restaurant has closed. The specialty is tacos al vapor, steamed in batches, served with pickled vegetables, and the menu also includes carne asada, brochetas and milanesa.

Context

Tijuana's taquerías are known for adobada carved from the trompo, carne asada with guacamole, and birria, and many stay open late. Steamed tacos are a long-standing Tijuana specialty. Tacos al vapor are filled in advance and kept warm in a covered container so that the tortillas soften in the steam. Avenida Revolución is Tijuana's historic main street, lined with shops and bars serving visitors from across the border.
