Las Cuatro Milpas

Las Cuatro Milpas is a family-run Mexican restaurant in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego, opened in 1933 and described by San Diego Magazine as the city's first Mexican restaurant.

History

The restaurant grew out of a tortilla business. Around 1930, Petra and Natividad Estudillo were selling homemade tortillas from their home on Logan Avenue, and in 1933 the family opened a small eatery next door. San Diego Magazine has also credited the founding to Margarita Hernandez, whose family has kept the business going for several generations. For decades it operated at 1857 Logan Avenue, a cash-only counter where cooks fried tortillas to order and customers lined up for breakfast tacos.

The restaurant later relocated within the barrio to 1985 National Avenue, keeping its homestyle format and adding a picnic-style seating area.

The kitchen is known for rolled and folded tacos fried in the shell, often filled with shredded chicken or beef, along with carne asada tacos, flautas, rice, beans, tamales and chorizo with eggs. Corn tortillas are made in house. The menu has historically been short and inexpensive, and the restaurant is cited in local food histories as one of the starting points of San Diego's taco culture.
