Las Palmas Taco Bar

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

Las Palmas Taco Bar is a family-run taco shop near the beach in Santa Cruz, California, opened in 1955 by former farmworker Martin Mendez Sr.

History

Martin Mendez Sr., who had worked in the fields before starting the business, opened Las Palmas in 1955, making it one of the oldest taco counters on the Central Coast. Visit Santa Cruz County reports that his grandson, Rick Mendez, runs it today. The shop stands a short walk from the shoreline.

The cooking leans toward older Mexican-American style. Crisp beef tacos topped with lettuce and cheese are a mainstay, along with enchiladas and breakfast burritos. An oversized super quesadilla is nicknamed the Longboard Special by staff, and the chile de árbol hot sauce is made in house.
