Lucha Libre Taco Shop is a wrestling-themed taco shop founded in 2008 in Mission Hills, San Diego, by the Rojano-Garcia brothers, known for its hot-pink interior and the Surfin' California burrito.

History

Brothers Jose Luis, Maurilio and Diego Rojano-Garcia started the shop in 2008 as a side project, drawing on a childhood spent watching Mexican professional wrestling. The original location is on West Washington Street in Mission Hills. A stand at Petco Park followed in 2014, a North Park shop in 2015, and later a branch in Pacific Beach.

Design

The dining room is painted largely hot pink and hung with wrestling masks, posters and memorabilia, with disco balls overhead and a gilded restroom. A gold Champion's Booth can be reserved a day in advance. Professional wrestlers eat free, and customers wearing a lucha mask receive a discount.

Taco options include a griddled-cheese taco, the Ado-Haba (adobada with habanero), mahi-mahi and shrimp tacos, a surf-and-turf taco and a birria quesataco. Burritos include a classic, a poblano, a veggie, a surf-and-turf and the Surfin', the shop's take on the California burrito, alongside quesadillas and sides of corn, rice and beans. An early review in the UCSD Guardian described the queso taco as two tortillas with a crunchy layer of griddled cheese, avocado, a house sauce and a choice of steak, chicken or fries, and noted that the brothers rotated limited-edition salsas, including a beer-flavored version for San Diego Beer Week.
