Mexicali Taco & Co.
Mexicali Taco & Co. is a northern Baja-style taquería on North Figueroa Street in Chinatown, Los Angeles, that began in 2009 as a parking-lot stand Downtown.
History
Two natives of Mexicali opened a small stand in 2009 on a surface parking lot near 1st and Beaudry streets in Downtown Los Angeles, according to The Infatuation. Time Out names chef Esdras Ochoa as the cook leading the kitchen. The stand won L.A. TACO's Taco Madness in 2011, a victory the publication credits with helping it open a permanent shop on Figueroa Street, and won again in 2013, becoming the tournament's first two-time champion.
Menu
The signature is the vampiro, a griddled tortilla folded around cheese and meat with a garlic sauce. Other items include the cachetada, a flat crisp tortilla topped with carne asada, an adobo-grilled shrimp taco with cheese, and nachos. Flour and corn tortillas are made in the Baja manner, and a salsa and toppings bar lets diners dress their tacos.
