Overview

South Beach is a beach bar near the foot of Newport Avenue, the main commercial street of Ocean Beach, with open windows and a large beer list. It is one of several San Diego bars where seafood tacos became a mainstay of the menu.

The San Diego Reader's 2015 taco survey recommended the grilled mahi mahi taco, marinated in teriyaki sauce and served on a flour tortilla, and the fried shrimp taco, breaded in panko. Both depart from the Baja original, in which battered whitefish is fried and served on corn tortillas with cabbage and crema; the teriyaki marinade in particular reflects the mix of Mexican, Asian and surf-culture influences found in San Diego beach food.
