Taco de ojo (expression)

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Article
Also known as: Echarse un taco de ojo, Eye taco

Echarse un taco de ojo (literally "to have an eye taco") is a Mexican slang expression meaning to look admiringly at attractive people without interacting with them, roughly equivalent to the English "eye candy"; it is unrelated to the beef-eye tacos sold at cabeza stands.

Meaning

The phrase treats looking as a kind of snack. Someone who says "voy a echar un taco de ojo" means they are going to enjoy watching good-looking passers-by, purely for the pleasure of it and without introducing themselves. Mexico News Daily, in a column on food-based Mexican sayings, stresses that the idiom has nothing to do with the cow-eye tacos (tacos de ojo) that Mexicans actually eat. Speaking Latino lists "un taco de ojo" as Mexican usage for being delighted by what one sees of the opposite sex.

Usage and translation

The public radio program A Way with Words discussed the phrase as a piece of Mexican slang whose literal reading suggests a taco filled with eyes, before explaining that it corresponds to English "eye candy": a person, or more loosely anything, that is very pleasant to look at. The noun can describe the person being admired ("es un taco de ojo") or, with echar or echarse, the act of looking.

Relation to the taco

The joke works because tacos de ojo are a real item. Beef-eye tacos are a genuine specialty of stands selling tacos de cabeza, which gives the idiom its double meaning.
