Also known as: El Taco Nazo

Taco Nazo, also styled El Taco Nazo, is a Southern California chain of Baja-style fish taco restaurants founded in 1978 by Gilberto and Maria Romero, a couple from Ensenada, which began as a taco truck in La Puente.

History

According to the company's own history, Gilberto and Maria Romero came to the Los Angeles area from Ensenada, Baja California, bringing a family fish taco recipe, and started selling from a taco truck in 1978. The La Puente shop on Valley Boulevard grew out of that truck and is treated as the original; Time Out also names La Puente as the first location. The Romeros say they have since helped relatives and friends open fish taco businesses of their own using the same recipe.

The chain's website lists restaurants in La Puente, South El Monte, Bellflower, Walnut, La Habra and Santa Ana, though it describes Santa Ana as both newly open and opening soon. The South El Monte branch on Garvey Avenue has a drive-through. In Orange County the La Habra restaurant at 121 S. Beach Blvd. operates as El Taco Nazo, the name under which OC Weekly listed it in its 2015 county taco guide.

The specialty is the Ensenada fish taco: hand-battered fish fried and served on a warm corn tortilla with cabbage, pico de gallo and crema, with shrimp prepared the same way. A three-taco combination plate comes with beans and chips. OC Weekly credited the crunch of the La Habra tacos to a closely guarded batter and pointed to the blistered chiles güeros served on the side, a common Baja seafood-stand garnish. Taco Nazo appears in The Infatuation's guide to the best fish tacos in Los Angeles and its list of the city's 25 best tacos.
