Also known as: El Franc

Tacos El Franc is a family-run Tijuana taquería known for mesquite-grilled carne asada and adobada from the trompo, and the parent of a San Diego branch.

Overview

Tacos El Franc began as a street cart opened by Javier Valadez, which a 2025 Michelin Guide article dates to 1974, and grew into a brick-and-mortar landmark; another Michelin page gives 1996 as the start of its Tijuana-style service, so the founding date is reported inconsistently. It was one of the few Tijuana taco shops named in the first Michelin Guide Mexico selection in 2024 and remains listed in 2026. In 2025 owner Roberto Kelly announced a San Diego location designed to closely mirror the original, the start of a planned United States expansion covered in a separate article.

The restaurant occupies a busy corner under a roof with bright blue open walls, white tables and a counter. Customers take a seat and order from aproned staff who circulate through the room, while separate stations grill, carve and chop. The menu is meat-focused: carne asada grilled over mesquite, adobada pork shaved from the trompo, and formats including tacos, tostadas, quesadillas and vampiros.
