Tacos El Tucan
Tacos El Tucan is a Tijuana-style taquería founded in Richmond in 2019 by Alfredo Padilla, which later expanded to San Francisco's Castro District and to San Rafael in Marin County.
History
Padilla opened the Richmond taquería in 2019 at 12505 San Pablo Ave., a site previously occupied by the Pup Hut hot dog stand; the old blue slanted roof was replaced by a red one. In 2022 the San Francisco Chronicle named it one of the top taco spots in the East Bay. Padilla later told the Chronicle he would open a second location at 3600 16th St. in the Castro, in the former Bonita Taqueria y Rotisserie space, after friends of Bonita's owners alerted him that the turnkey restaurant was available. The Marin County branch had been in the works since 2021, when KQED reported that Padilla, his brother Edgar and Victor Ceja were partnering on El Tucán Tacos and Beer at 15 Harbor St. in San Rafael's Canal neighborhood, in the former Pier 15 space with a deck over the water. By April 2026 KQED described it as newly open: a sit-down restaurant with a bar and a creekside deck, and the only location serving Baja-style fried fish and shrimp tacos.
Menu
The cooking follows Tijuana's grilled-meat tradition, with carne asada and adobada served on hand-pressed corn tortillas, which the Chronicle's critic Cesar Hernandez considered worth occasional half-hour waits. The menu also includes quesabirria, burritos and California burritos stuffed with French fries. The San Francisco location added fish and carnitas tacos and serves beer, micheladas and low-alcohol margaritas.
