Tahona

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

Tahona is a mezcal bar and Mexican restaurant on San Diego Avenue in Old Town San Diego, with a hidden cocktail bar called Oculto 477.

Overview

Tahona is a dim, comparatively upscale space with leather banquettes in Old Town, the historic district that is home to many of San Diego's oldest tourist-oriented Mexican restaurants. A 2026 review in The Infatuation described it as a calmer alternative to the area's busier spots, suited to dates and conversation. Reservations are taken online. The restaurant also houses Oculto 477, a small hidden bar. A tahona is the large stone wheel traditionally used to crush roasted agave hearts in mezcal production.

Dishes noted by The Infatuation include short rib birria ramen, a pork tamal with plantain purée, squash blossoms in masa tempura, machaca tostadas topped with fried wagyu, chayote escabeche, and tacos of chicken and rabbit with charred avocado and pineapple.
