Taqueria San Jose
Taqueria San Jose is a taquería on Fourth Street in downtown San Rafael, noted by local student reviewers for its al pastor burritos and quick service.
Overview
Taqueria San Jose occupies a storefront at 615 Fourth Street, on San Rafael's main downtown commercial street. A 2018 comparison of Marin burrito shops published by The Tam News, a Marin student newspaper, put it alongside Picante in San Rafael and two Mill Valley spots, Joe's Taco Lounge and Lucinda's Mexican Food.
The student writer singled out the al pastor burrito as the order to get and noted that burritos came out fast and that chips were offered free of charge. The same piece described the dining room as dimly lit and judged the salsa bar to be limited compared with competitors.
Context
Al pastor, pork marinated in chile and achiote and traditionally cooked on a vertical spit, is one of the standard fillings at Bay Area taquerías, and the Mission-style burrito format common in San Francisco is the usual vehicle for it north of the Golden Gate as well. The sources consulted give no founding date or owner names, and no recent coverage was found to confirm whether the shop is still operating.
