Yuca's
Yuca's is a small Mexican food stand on Hillhurst Avenue in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, founded in 1976 by Socorro "Mama" Herrera and recognized as a James Beard America's Classic.
History
Socorro Herrera opened Yuca's on April 1, 1976, in a small hut on Hillhurst Avenue in Los Feliz. The family later opened a second location in Pasadena, managed by her daughter Dora. The James Beard Foundation named Yuca's one of its America's Classics, an award for long-running, locally cherished restaurants.
Taco Madness
When L.A. TACO launched Taco Madness in 2009, an online bracket in which readers vote for the city's favorite taco, Yuca's won the first tournament. The publication noted in 2017 that the stand had remained a regular entrant in the contest in later years, as the field grew from its original size to dozens of taquerías and the format shifted to protein-based and regional brackets.
