Día del Taco
Día del Taco is an unofficial celebration of the taco held in Mexico every March 31, launched by the broadcaster Televisa as an advertising campaign in 2007 and since adopted by taquerías, restaurants and delivery apps as an annual promotion.
Origin
The date began as television marketing. According to Gastrolab, Televisa launched the campaign on March 31, 2007, aiming to add another date to the calendar of consumer promotions, under the slogan "Porque a todo mundo le llega su día" (because everyone gets their day). Infobae attributes the campaign to Televisa's Canal de las Estrellas and RÉCORD to its Canal 5. Taquerías and restaurants were invited to set up at the parking lot of the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and at Parque Papagayo in Acapulco, where tacos and live music were broadcast.
Growth
Gastrolab notes that the first edition made little impression, but the date gradually took hold and spread through social media under the hashtag #DíaDelTaco. RÉCORD describes it as a marketing strategy that grew into a popular tradition among taquerías, restaurants and taco lovers rather than an official holiday.
Today
March 31 now brings discounts and special offers from taquerías and chains, and delivery platforms publish figures on taco orders. El Imparcial, writing on the 2025 edition, cited Uber Eats as reporting more than 24 million taco orders in Mexico in 2024, 8 million of them in Mexico City, and DiDi Food as counting 40 million tacos ordered nationwide. Gastrolab cites a 2021 study by UNAM geographer Baruch Sanginés that counted more than 1.5 million taquerías across Mexico.
Other taco days
Mexico's March date is separate from National Taco Day in the United States, which falls on October 4, and from the weekly Taco Tuesday.
