National Taco Day

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Article
Also known as: Día del Taco, Día Nacional del Taco

National Taco Day refers to two observances: Mexico's Día del Taco, held every March 31 since 2007, and the National Taco Day marked in the United States on October 4, when media publish taco rankings and features.

Día del Taco in Mexico

In Mexico the Día del Taco falls on March 31. According to Selecciones, the Mexican edition of Reader's Digest, it has been celebrated since 2007 and began as a campaign, attributed to the broadcaster Televisa, to promote the taco and reinforce Mexican cultural identity. Media outlets mark the day with features on regional specialties. In 2022, for instance, TV Azteca surveyed the signature taco of different states: barbacoa in Hidalgo, cochito in Chiapas, buche in Ciudad Juárez, flour flautas in Ciudad Victoria, tacos acorazados in Cuernavaca, tacos de plaza in the State of Mexico, octopus and shrimp tacos in Veracruz, fried beef in Tabasco and al pastor in Mexico City. UnoTV used the 2024 date to publish a history of the taco placero.

Figures

Coverage of the day often includes statistics. Selecciones cited INEGI figures of more than 145,000 taco stands in the country, with the State of Mexico, Veracruz and Jalisco leading the industry, along with a 2024 estimate of national taco consumption attributed to Mexico's agriculture ministry. For 2024, Uber Eats reported more than 24 million taco orders on its platform, with Mexico City, Nuevo León and Jalisco in the lead, according to adn40, which also noted that the platform listed about 12,000 taquerías nationwide.

National Taco Day in the United States

In the United States, National Taco Day is an annual observance on October 4. KRON4 marked it on that date in 2022 with a list of the best-rated tacos in the San Francisco Bay Area, describing it as the annual day of observance of taco fandom. It is distinct from Taco Tuesday, the weekly custom whose name was trademarked by the Taco John's chain until 2023 and from Mexico's March 31 Día del Taco.
