El Faro
El Faro is a taquería at Folsom and 20th streets in San Francisco's Mission District, California, founded in 1961 by Febronio Ontiveros and widely credited as the birthplace of the Mission-style super burrito.
History
Febronio Ontiveros opened El Faro as a grocery and delicatessen; the city's Legacy Business Registry staff report dates the first burrito sold there to September 26, 1961. Ontiveros is credited with creating the super burrito at this location, a claim disputed by Taqueria La Cumbre. In the early 1980s the family expanded to several other San Francisco addresses and reportedly operated eight shops by 1984. After Ontiveros died in 1999, the business changed hands; Raymunda Ramirez, who started as a line cook in 1980, and Patrick Kocourek bought the Folsom Street location in 2007.
Legacy
The Folsom Street shop has operated continuously since 1961 and applied for San Francisco's Legacy Business Registry in 2024. Other El Faro restaurants in the Bay Area are not under the same ownership.
