Taquería El Farolito
Taquería El Farolito is a San Francisco Bay Area taquería chain founded in 1982 by Salvador "Don Chava" Lopez Monroy at Mission and 24th streets, famous for late-night super burritos and tacos.
History
Salvador Lopez Monroy, a Mexican immigrant, financed El Farolito by selling his share of Taqueria San Jose, which he had co-founded, and opened the first shop at 2779 Mission Street in 1982. The name, meaning the little lighthouse, reportedly came from a Mexico City taquería where he had worked. He also founded the El Farolito soccer club in 1985. After his death in January 2021 his family took over. A North Beach location was initially blocked under the city's formula-retail rules before opening in 2022; branches in Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park operate as El Favorito.
Menu and reputation
The Mission and 24th shop is the busiest and is known for lines after the bars close. Cheese is melted onto the tortilla as the meat cooks, and its avocado salsa is well regarded. The San Francisco Chronicle placed it on its Top 100 Bay Area restaurants in 2019, and Esquire readers voted its burrito America's most life-altering in 2013.
