El Greco

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

El Greco is a taquería in the Hipódromo area of Condesa, Mexico City, open since 1976, known for its doneraki, a spit-roasted pork taco in the tacos árabes tradition.

History

El Greco has served the Condesa and Hipódromo neighborhoods since 1976, according to Chilango, making it one of the area's longest-running taquerías. Its name and its signature dish point to the eastern Mediterranean roots shared by tacos árabes and al pastor, both descendants of the vertical spit brought to Mexico by immigrants from the Middle East.

The house specialty is the doneraki, pork seasoned with a traditional mix that includes onion, sea salt and parsley, cooked on a trompo and shaved thin so the edges crisp. It is served on warm pan árabe or pita, or in flour tortillas, and regulars often add melted cheese. The Infatuation recommended the doneraki plate with cheese and noted a meat-free pita taco filled with mushrooms and cheese. Large trompo tortas are also served for sharing.
