El Jardín
El Jardín is a regional Mexican restaurant at Liberty Station in San Diego that received a Bib Gourmand in the first statewide Michelin Guide California in 2019.
Overview
El Jardín occupies a space on Perry Road at Liberty Station, the former Naval Training Center in Point Loma that was converted into a district of shops and restaurants. In May 2019, ahead of the first statewide Michelin Guide California, Michelin named it one of eight Bib Gourmand restaurants in the San Diego area, a designation for good cooking at moderate prices. ABC 10News reported that inspectors described it as a regional contemporary Mexican restaurant.
Context
The 2019 Bib Gourmand list for San Diego included only a handful of Mexican restaurants, among them El Jardín and the taco shop Lola 55 in East Village. Regional Mexican restaurants of this type draw on the cooking of specific Mexican states, such as moles, slow-braised meats and masa dishes, rather than on the border-style menu of carne asada and fried fish that defines most San Diego taco shops.
