Also known as: Tío Pepe

El Tío Pepe is a Tijuana taco business with several locations, the original in the Gabilondo neighborhood, known for tacos dorados de birria, carnitas and Guadalajara-style tortas ahogadas.

Overview

El Tío Pepe appears in San Diego Magazine's guide to Tijuana's best taco shops, which singled out the original Gabilondo branch as the best of its several outlets. The menu brings together specialties of Jalisco: crisp fried birria tacos, carnitas and the torta ahogada, a pork sandwich drowned in tomato and chile sauce.

For the carnitas, the guide recommended the masisa, a mixed cut of pork, with guacamole. The tortas are made with birote, the crusty sourdough roll of Guadalajara, which the business ships in from that city rather than substituting local bread, a detail that sets it apart from many imitators in northern Mexico.

Context

The shop reflects the strong influence of migrants from Jalisco and Michoacán on Tijuana's food, visible in the city's many birria and carnitas stands.
