El Turix
El Turix is a small taquería in Polanco, Mexico City, devoted to Yucatecan cochinita pibil served as tacos, panuchos and tortas.
Overview
El Turix sits on Emilio Castelar, close to Parque Lincoln in Polanco, one of the city's wealthiest districts, yet it has long been known as an inexpensive lunch stop for office workers. Time Out México described a cramped room with very little seating, lines out the door at lunchtime and a famously brusque owner.
The menu is narrow and built around a single filling: cochinita pibil, the achiote-marinated pork of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is served in soft tacos, in panuchos, the Yucatecan fried tortilla stuffed with beans, and in tortas. Each order is finished with purple onion and a fiery habanero salsa. The average spend at the time of the Time Out review was about 70 pesos per person, which made it one of the cheapest meals in the neighborhood.
Significance
El Turix is frequently cited as a benchmark for cochinita in the capital, far from the dish's home in Yucatán, and shows how regional specialties have found dedicated counters in Mexico City.
