La Tonina

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

La Tonina is a taquería in the San Rafael neighborhood of Mexico City, founded by the Monterrey-born wrestler La Tonina Jackson and known for northern flour-tortilla tacos.

Overview

According to Chilango, the taquería at Serapio Rendón 27 in San Rafael was founded by La Tonina Jackson, a lucha libre wrestler from Monterrey. His fame drew the first customers; today the business is run by Patricia Soto and her family, and regulars return mainly for the flour tortillas, which are rolled out by hand on the premises.

The menu reflects the founder's northern roots, with tacos of chilorio (Sinaloa-style shredded pork in chile) and cochipecho, and the house is also known for its sweet gorditas.

Context

Chilango's 2023 feature En busca del taco más chilango chose one representative taquería for each of fifteen zones of the capital and its suburbs, favoring neighborhood spots over viral ones. La Tonina represented the zone of San Rafael, Cuauhtémoc, Juárez and Chapultepec.
