La Venadita
La Venadita is a Mexican restaurant and taquería in Sacramento's Oak Park neighborhood, California, opened by Sacramento-born restaurateur Thomas Schnetz with his brother David and decorated around Frida Kahlo's painting The Wounded Deer.
History
Thomas Schnetz grew up in Sacramento, opened his first restaurant there and then ran several Bay Area restaurants before returning to open La Venadita on Third Avenue with his brother and business partner David. Inside Sacramento says Schnetz learned Mexican cooking on frequent trips to Mexico. The name means little deer, and the logo and decor draw on Kahlo's self-portrait as a wounded deer. The Sacramento News & Review covered the opening, describing a bright room with exposed brick and counter service.
Menu
Tacos include crispy carnitas with cheese and pico de gallo, fried fish with árbol aioli and meatball (albóndiga) tacos. The kitchen also serves vegetarian quesadillas with mushrooms, asparagus and poblano cream, enchiladas with mole coloradito and a vegetarian chile relleno. A full bar focuses on tequila and mezcal, and SACtoday notes a happy-hour deal of two tacos with a beer.
