Sonoratown

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

Sonoratown is a Sonoran-style taquería in Downtown Los Angeles known for flour tortillas made in house and for charred carne asada, with later branches in Mid-City and Long Beach.

Overview

Sonoratown is a small order-at-the-counter shop on East 8th Street in the Fashion District. It applies the cooking of Mexico's northern state of Sonora: thin flour tortillas, made in house with Sonoran flour and lard according to Time Out, wrapped around grilled beef. The business later opened a second shop in Mid-City and a third in Long Beach.

Sonoratown won L.A. TACO's Taco Madness tournament in 2017, when the publication described it as a newcomer, and finished as runner-up to Villa's Tacos in the 2022 final. The MICHELIN Guide lists the Downtown shop as a Bib Gourmand in its 2026 guide.

The menu covers tacos, burritos, quesadillas and the chivichanga, a small rolled flour-tortilla burrito that the MICHELIN Guide calls a runaway hit. Fillings include carne asada, chicken and chorizo. The Infatuation singles out the Burrito 2.0, which combines steak, guacamole, pinto beans and a chiltepín salsa.
