Super Cocina

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

Super Cocina is a cocina económica on University Avenue in San Diego's Normal Heights area that serves home-style Mexican stews from a changing menu rather than a standard taco list.

Overview

Super Cocina is often grouped with taco shops but works differently. The San Diego Reader reported in 2015 that the owner hires home cooks to prepare family-style dishes, that the menu changes frequently and includes goat and other stewed meats, and that meals come with rice, beans and tortillas for under ten dollars; the paper added that chefs visit the restaurant for inspiration. San Diego Magazine, including it in its 2025 list of the forty best tacos in the county, described it as a cocina económica, a Mexican term for an inexpensive restaurant serving soups and guisados, and noted that it offers only one official taco.

How to order

Rather than ordering the single taco, San Diego Magazine recommended choosing a combination plate of stews with corn tortillas and assembling tacos at the table, the way guisados are eaten at home and at market fondas in Mexico.
