Also known as: Los Especiales

Tacos de Canasta Los Especiales is a basket-taco shop on Avenida Madero in Mexico City's Centro Histórico, steps from the Zócalo, selling roughly 2,000 steamed tacos a day.

Overview

Los Especiales is one of the few brick-and-mortar sellers of tacos de canasta, a style usually sold from baskets on bicycles. It sits about half a block from the Zócalo, where a line often forms on the street but moves fast. A 2026 Michelin Guide article reported that the shop sells around 2,000 tacos a day, with each basket holding more than 200, and named Uriel Hernández as its manager. The shop entered the guide's recommended selection in 2025.

There are only four fillings: chicharrón in a red adobo of dried chiles and vinegar, chicharrón in tomatillo salsa, refried beans and smooth potato purée. Filled tortillas are packed into a deep metal tub, where they soften in the steam and fat they release. Customers pay first, receive tokens and hand them to the taquero, then add guacamole salsa, pickled chiles and cabbage. Michelin described them as some of the least expensive tacos in the city.
