Tacos Doña Mary La Gritona

Also known as: Doña Mary La Gritona

Tacos Doña Mary La Gritona is a family-run breakfast taquería in downtown Monterrey, Nuevo León, named for its founder and holding a Michelin Bib Gourmand.

Overview

This family business has operated for more than two decades and takes its name from Doña Mary, called la gritona, the yeller, for good-naturedly scolding customers who hold up the line. It was one of the taquerías awarded a Bib Gourmand in the first Michelin Guide Mexico in 2024, the only taquería outside Mexico City with that award that year, and has kept the award since.

Customers order at the counter and then cross the street to eat at plastic tables in a covered space. Tortillas, flour or corn, are made on site. The daily offerings change, but Michelin recommends the barbacoa and the salsa molcajeteada, ground in a stone mortar; onion, cilantro and three salsas of rising heat are set out. It serves from early morning until early afternoon and takes cash only.
