Tacos El Paisa (Imperial Avenue)

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

Tacos El Paisa is a Tijuana-style taquería on Imperial Avenue in San Diego's Sherman Heights area, known for adobada with fresh-pressed tortillas and three free salsas with every order.

History

According to the San Diego Reader, the Tacos El Paisa operation ran several stands in Tijuana before opening in San Diego in 1999 at 47th Street and Logan Avenue in Lincoln Park. The Reader later reviewed its taquería at 2494 Imperial Avenue, in Sherman Heights, noting a covered patio that gave it a restaurant feel and a menu modeled on Tijuana street food. San Diego Magazine listed Tacos el Paisa among its 2019 contenders for best taco shop, citing adobada and machaca and its covered patio.

Al pastor (adobada) is crisped from the trompo and served on two fresh-pressed masa tortillas with pineapple, guacamole, onion and cilantro. Carne asada is cooked over charcoal, and seafood options include a shrimp enchilado taco in chipotle cream and, when available, a marlin gobernador. Every order comes with chips and three house salsas: mild tomatillo, habanero and smoky chipotle.
