Tacos Lionydas
Tacos Lionydas is an al pastor street stand near East Atherton Street and Clark Avenue in Long Beach, California, opened in 2022 by taquero Lionel Perez.
History
Lionel Perez spent six years working as a taquero before opening his own stand in June 2022. He picked Long Beach because few carts in the city were selling al pastor in the style he cooked. According to the Long Beach Post, the stand faced trouble early on: a man harassed Perez and his workers and threatened to report them to immigration authorities, and a month later the city's health department impounded the cart and equipment over missing permits. The stand kept operating with support from neighbors.
Menu and recognition
The pork is cooked on a vertical trompo over a gas flame and can be served with pineapple. Other meats include chorizo, carne asada, pollo, lengua, suadero, buche and cabeza, and the stand also sells burritos, mulitas, quesadillas, tortas and papa asada. In July 2024 the Los Angeles Times named its al pastor among the region's 101 best tacos. The stand operates nightly in the Traffic Circle area, from early evening until after midnight.
