Tamarindo Latin Kitchen & Bar

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

Tamarindo Latin Kitchen & Bar is a taquería-style restaurant and bar on University Avenue in North Park, San Diego, opened in 2017 and known for its avocado crab taco.

History

Tamarindo opened in April 2017 at 2906 University Avenue, in the space that had been Claire de Lune, a North Park coffee house that closed the year before. San Diego Magazine reported that chef de cuisine Elliott Townsend had previously cooked at The Pearl and that bar manager Mark Broadfoot came from George's California Modern. The magazine described the room as a cross between a taquería, a sports bar and a gastropub: guests order at the bar, serve themselves chips and salsa, and sit in booths or on a patio that welcomes dogs.

The magazine's Very Important Taco column featured the avocado crab taco, which inverts the usual fish taco. Soft crab meat stands in for the fish, while tempura-battered fried avocado supplies the crunch. It is topped with cabbage, crema and pico de gallo on a corn tortilla. The bar program emphasizes mezcal, rum and sustainably sourced tequila.
