TJ Tacos

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

TJ Tacos is a Tijuana-style taquería in Escondido, in northern San Diego County, founded by a former manager and cook from Tacos El Gordo and known for adobada and avocado sauce.

Overview

TJ Tacos was started by a former manager and chef of Tacos El Gordo, the Tijuana chain that brought the city's late-night taco culture to San Diego County in 1998, and diners frequently compare the two. Like El Gordo it centers on adobada, pork marinated in red chile and cooked on a vertical spit, sliced to order and topped with a smooth avocado salsa in the Tijuana manner. San Diego Magazine, which placed it on its 2025 list of the county's forty best tacos, highlighted the adobada and the avocado sauce and noted that the menu does not include chicken.

The shop gives North County residents a version of a style otherwise concentrated in the South Bay, near the border, where Tijuana-born taquerías cluster.
