Tortas Bravas

From WikiTacos, the taco encyclopedia · Taquería

Tortas Bravas is a torta shop in a Florence Avenue strip mall in Downey, known for a torta ahogada of carnitas.

Overview

Tortas Bravas is at 7414 Florence Avenue in Downey, in the same strip mall as Uncle Henry's Deli and near the Amapola Deli and Market. It appeared in a 2013 PBS SoCal food tour of southeast Los Angeles County by writer Javier Cabral.

The dish the tour featured was the torta ahogada de carnitas: caramelized pork carnitas on a crusty roll, drowned in a spicy salsa of tomato and chile de árbol. The torta ahogada, or drowned sandwich, is a signature street food of Guadalajara, where it is made on a dense, crusty roll called birote that holds up to being soaked in sauce.

Downey, sometimes called the Mexican Beverly Hills, is a middle-class city in southeast LA County with a large Mexican-American population. The 2013 tour noted that the plaza around 7400 Florence Avenue grouped a masa and tortilla market, a craft beer bar and this sandwich shop. The source consulted gives no founding date or owner names, and no 2024 or later coverage was found to confirm the shop's status.
