Tacos in Canada

Mexican taco scene

Toronto’s tortillas and seafood tacos

The place: Toronto

Toronto sits on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. Its neighborhoods provide one entry into Canada’s varied Mexican restaurant scene; this guide does not stand in for every Canadian city.

Taco culture

Toronto has taquerías and Mexican restaurants that emphasize fresh tortillas, braised fillings and seafood. Campechano is a documented example of a taquería making tortillas from Mexican heirloom corn, with fillings including battered fish and barbacoa.

Indigenous frybread tacos also belong to the wider Canadian food landscape, but have their own histories. They should not be treated as a national replacement for Mexican corn-tortilla tacos.
